At this stage of your pregnancy, you have to be careful when standing on a stool or stepladder. In fact it is advisable not to engage in any activity that would require you to do this. This is because as your body starts to get larger, your sense of balance may be a bit off and it is easier for you to fall or twist your ankle. However, it is a good idea to take walks on a frequent basis to keep your bones strong.

By now, you have likely felt strange tightening sensations in your stomach. These are slight contractions that are just a preamble for what is to come. It is your body’s way of getting ready for birth and to prepare you for it as well. The contractions are so mild that you may only notice them when you relax. Since the ligaments are also stretching you may have aching pains down the sides of your stomach. Many young mothers often contact their doctors when this happens because they think there is something wrong with the baby. However, there is nothing to worry about and your doctor will tell you that although it is a bit uncomfortable, there is nothing to worry about.

At 30 weeks the baby weighs about 3 pounds and is about 15 inches long. The features of the face are starting to develop and all the fingers and toes are in place. If you have a 3D ultrasound done around this time, you will see the baby moving about and even smiling. As you see the hands and feet moving about, you will understand where those kicks have been coming from that sometimes make parts of your stomach stick out. In ultrasound pictures at this stage, you may even see the baby sucking its thumb. It is also possible to determine for sure the sex of the baby. If you don’t want to know if you’re going to have a boy or a girl, the technician can make sure that you don’t see that part of the pictures.

Morning sickness has passed by the time you are thirty weeks into your pregnancy. However, it has probably been replaced by an urge to eat. At this time you should be careful of what you eat because it could add weight to your body that will be very hard to get off after the baby is born. Stick to healthy foods and follow the food guide to make sure you are getting the right amounts of nutrients the growing baby needs.

During this time your baby needs more oxygen as the lungs are starting to develop and the baby is starting to breathe on its own. This means you need more iron from your food. Your diet should include a lot of dark green, leafy vegetables, dried fruits and nuts and lean, red meat. Drinking lots of water is also essential so that your organs have the fluids they need to function properly. When you drink at least eight glasses of water each day it will help to decrease the amount of fluid you retain. This is especially important if you notice that your hands and feet are swelling. The water will help to build new cells in your body and in the baby and improve the blood flow.

Because your belly is expanding, you may be feeling uncomfortable when you lie down at night or just to take a nap during the day. If you have a body pillow that you can wrap yourself around, this tends to reduce your discomfort. Don drink a lot of fluids just before bedtime because this will cause you to have to go to the bathroom several times during the night. You should also avoid caffeinated drinks that may keep you awake or cause you to have heartburn.

Your baby is starting to grow rapidly at this time and the internal organs are really starting to develop. You will experience more and more kicks and a lot of movement. At this time of the pregnancy, the baby usually weighs a little over three pounds and measures about fourteen inches long.

If you were to have a 3D ultrasound at this time, you would really be able to see the facial features of the baby and see it kicking its legs. The baby will likely be sucking its thumb. If you want to know whether you are having a boy or girl, this is the time when you can really see the sex organs on an ultrasound and know without a doubt the preparations you need to make for the clothing and the nursery.

It is important for you to get lots of rest and stay off your feet whenever possible. Morning sickness has passed and you have a renewed interest in going out with friends. However, you still have to watch what you eat so that you don have indigestion problems. The growing baby is putting more pressure on your kidneys and growing back. You can find out whether you are having a boy or girl by the 25th week either through an ultrasound or a test called an amniocentisis. Sixth, read to your baby or listen to calming music. Every day, you should take some time to listen to your favorite music. So, whether it be jazz or the blues, you’ll find that taking time out to enjoy the music, will make you feel more connected to baby. On the same token, you can read your baby nursery rhymes, or sing him a song. Either way, you’ll see that this strengthens the maternal/fetal bond tremendously.

Seventh, look at those ultrasound pictures. Whenever you need to feel connected, get out those ultrasound pictures and take a peek. In addition, if your doctor has a 3D ultrasound machine, make sure that you get one. They are amazing and actually allow you to see your baby up-close and personal. Either way, take a peek at those pictures whenever you feel the need to connect to your baby.

In conclusion, you can significantly improve the maternal/fetal bond if you stimulate baby’s growth, meditate and talk to baby, listen to baby’s heartbeat, read to baby, and evaluate your baby’s ultrasound pictures. By doing this, you will feel connected to your little one and your baby will feel connected to you too!

Fortunately, this is a rare occurrence with twins, only about 1% of all twins. Ultrasound is an excellent way to comparing the sizes of the twins. One baby may be slightly larger but hopeful not too much. Sometimes one baby will steal from the other.

Double the Complications. Twin pregnancies are at a much higher risk of premature labor. They are also at risk for low birth weight, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, toxemia of pregnancy, and complications of delivery.

Premature Labor. Premature is anything less than 37 weeks completed. Over 60% of all twins will deliver prematurely. Most of these premature deliveries occur after 34 weeks, in which case the overall long-term risks to the babies are quite rare. Deliveries before 34 weeks, especially those before 32 weeks, can result in low birth weight, and increased risks of permanent disabilities such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, hearing or vision problems. The best timing for delivery of twins is earlier than the actual due date. Keeping them in until the due date may result in larger babies, but also further increases the risks of placental complications, labor-related complications, and delivery –related complications. The ideal timing for delivery of twins is from 37 1/2 to 38 weeks pregnancy.

Signs of premature labor include: cramps, contractions, and menstrual pains, increasing pelvic or vaginal pressure, increasing low back pain, heavy vaginal discharge, vaginal spotting or bleeding, rectal pressure. If you experience any of these signs you should contact your doctor. Better safe than sorry.

Double the Delivery. The likelihood of you having a vaginal delivery with your twins is about 50%. In order for your doctor to consider a vaginal delivery both babies need to be head down; both should weigh more than 4-5 pounds and be more than 35-36 weeks gestation. Twins born from cesarean section are usually both about 1 minute apart. Many consider cesarean section to be a better option for twin births since if complication arrives they are better prepared. This is however something you should talk about with your doctor.

I experienced toxemia, often referred to as preeclampsia, which led me to an emergency cesarean section. I was scared out of my mind but when all was said and done they wheeled me down to the operating room at 34 weeks. 5 minutes after the epidural was given, my baby boys were born.
